Penguin Plunge raises $160,000 for Special Olympics Rhode Island

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — Special Olympics Rhode Island will host its 49th annual Penguin Plunge at Scarborough State Beach.

The organization said that 1,000 swimmers dove into the water and raised over $160,000 for Special Olympics athletes.

“This event has grown into a beloved tradition that unites families, friends, and colleagues in support of inclusion and respect,” President and CEO of Special Olympics Rhode Island Ed Pacheco said. “It’s heartwarming to see so many make this a part of their legacy, and their contributions create lasting opportunities for our athletes to shine.”

Organizers added that they anticipate the reaching the fundraising goal of $180,000 by the end of January.

Proceeds from the event go towards providing athletic training and competition programs to children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
