Penn Outscores Brown Despite Career High For Okolie

Brown University Press Release

Providence, R.I. – Penn’s Devon Goodman scored 21 points and Bryce Washington added 20 points to lift the Quakers to a 92-82 start-to-finish Ivy League win over Brown Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The loss drops Brown to 13-8 overall, 1-4 in the Ivy League, while Penn improves to 13-7, 2-4 in Ivy play.

“That was a tough game for us tonight,” said Brown head coach Mike Martin.  “Penn’s offensive execution and precision was excellent and we were not as sharp as we’ve been defensively. We kept fighting back until the end, but dug ourselves too deep a hole.”

The Quakers led by 12 at the half, 46-34, and pulled away in the final 20 minutes, leading by as many as 20 points, 78-58 on a layup by AJ Brodeur with 5:04 left on the clock.

Brown battled back with a 14-4 run to trail 82-72, with 2:41 remaining on a basket by sophomore George Mawanda-Kalema (Burke, VA).

The closest Brown got down the stretch was a nine point deficit, 88-79, following a trey by junior Zach Hunsaker (North Salt Lake City, UT).

Senior Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) kept the Bears in striking distance for most of the game, scoring high 25 points for his seventh straight double digit game.  He shot a sizzling 9-of-11 from the field and connected on 6-of-7 free throws.

The Bears had good inside play from sophomore Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA), who posted his seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and a game high 13 rebounds, while handing out five assists. Brown sophomore Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN) snapped out of his scoring slump with 21 points.

Goodman hit 8-of-11 field goals in scoring 21 points to pace four double figure scorers for the Quakers. Washington’s 20 points came on 5-of-7 shooting from the field, including 3-of 4 from beyond the three point arc.

Brodeur chipped in with 18 points for Penn, connecting on 8-of-14 field goals and grabbing six rebounds, while Michael Wang also scored in double figures with 11 points.

The Quakers led by as many as 14 points in the first half, 33-19, with 6:03 remaining on a layup by Max Rothschild.

The Bears cut the Quakers’ advantage to nine points, 33-24, with 5:08 left on an Okolie layup, but Penn built its lead back to 12 points, 46-34, at the half.

The Bears are back in action again tomorrow evening, hosting first-place Princeton at the Pizzitola Sports Center, starting at 6:00 pm.  The game will be televised live on NESN and ESPN+.
