PepsiCo dropping Aunt Jemima after over 130 years

(WLNE) – After 131 years, PepsiCo is dropping the brand name and mascot of Aunt Jemima.
A statement released by PepsiCo acknowledges the controversial mascot is based on a racial stereotype and will rebrand the line of pancake mix and maple syrup.
Packaging changes without the Aunt Jemima image will begin to appear throughout the 4th Quarter of 2020, according to PepsiCo.
“As we work to make progress toward racial equality through several initiatives, we also must take a hard look at our portfolio of brands and ensure they reflect our values and meet our consumers’ expectations,” said Kristin Kroepfl, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Quaker Foods North America.
Kroepfl mentioned that while work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, the company realized the changes were not enough.
PepsiCo said that Aunt Jemima will donate a minimum of $5 million to create ongoing support and engagement for the African American community.
Additionally, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, Ramon Laguarta announced their next time in promoting racial equality, which includes increased black representation at Pepsico.
