WARWICK, R.I. (AP) – Police in Warwick are warning residents to keep track of their pets after a dog was killed earlier this week in an apparent coyote attack.

Authorities say the 9-year-old cairn terrier had to be put down after suffering injuries in Wednesday night’s mauling.

Police said the attack happened in a neighborhood near the Valley Country Club.

The dog’s owner told police the animal was injured as it was roaming the family’s yard.

The owner found the dog bloodied and badly hurt, and a veterinarian later euthanized the animal.     There have been several coyote sightings in the area recently.

Warwick police said in a Facebook post: “Just a reminder to keep an eye on your pets when they go outside.”
