Pilgrim vs Johnston high school boys basketball game canceled Tuesday following social media controversy

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE)- Tuesday’s boys basketball match-up between Pilgrim and Johnston High Schools was canceled amid social media controversy.
“The basketball game was postponed as there were comments made by a few of the Johnston students on social media that caused tension between the two communities,” said Johnston Superintendent Bernie DiLullo.
Students from Johnston allegedly were making comments about late Pilgrim principal Gerry Habershaw, according to reports by the Warwick Beacon.
Habershaw died of COVID-19 complications last year.
“We learned about these comments on Tuesday and felt that they would cause tension between the two communities if the game went on as scheduled. The game was postponed to a later date,” DiLullo continued.
