Reyes Galindo has been on the job for 14 years at Tomato City Pizza in Providence.
He says he never keeps too much cash in his car, and after a scary incident Thursday night, he’s glad he doesn’t.
He says it was a little weird when he showed up to make a delivery on Hendrick Street that night and the customer asked him to meet him out back.
"He said you don’t understand you have to give me the money…I said…alright…. and then he pulled out the gun."
That’s when Galindo says the two men hit him in the eye with a gun, took his wallet and phone, and then stole his car.
Galindo ran for help and found a Providence detective nearby. Police spotted the suspects in Galindo’s car, but the pair ditched the car and got away.
Galindo says they took off with about $40. "It’s my system – I never carry that much money."
The cash may be gone, but one of Galindo’s old customers returned his debit card and license. The customer, Jorge Chacon, says he found it outside his home Friday morning…which, by the way, is not near Hendrick Street.
"I recognized who he was from past deliveries. Then I remembered a friend of mine told me he worked here so I figured I’d drop by see if he was working and give it to him."
Despite the scary encounter – and a black eye – Galindo was back at work the next day. His supervisor Alan Chambers says that’s just the kind of guy he is.
"He’s just your classic…old school…’I work, it’s my job, I come here I do it I don’t complain’…he gets it done, goes above and beyond all the time."
Galindo humbly replies. "I have to support my family this is the only way I can do it."
Police are still looking for any information on the incident and the suspects, described as two young Hispanic men, both short and thin. This is the first similar incident in the last couple of months, police say, but they were frequent this past spring.
They say the phone number used to call Tomato City was blocked and the Hendrick St. address was made up.
