Police: 1 in critical condition following fight between two roommates in Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE): A woman is in critical condition, following a fight with her roommate’s boyfriend, according to police.

Around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, two women who are roommates were arguing at 164 California Avenue, according to Lt. Richard Esposito.

Police were flagged down outside the home by Shawn McMurtery, 21, who suffered a stab wound and was bleeding heavily at the time., according to a police report. McMurtery told police he was stabbed by a woman inside the home.

When police entered the home, there were large amounts of blood covering the floors of multiple rooms within the home, according to the report. Police found Haley Perez, 21, lying in the bathtub in the bathroom. Perez had a severe laceration to her right temple, along with several stab wounds to her back and abdomen area.

Both Perez and McMurtery were taken to the hospital.

Police spoke to a witness, McMurtery’s girlfriend, who said there was a fight between her and Perez. During the argument, Perez displayed a knife and became aggressive towards her. Her boyfriend, McMurtery attempted to intervene and was stabbed multiple times by Perez.

While attempting to defend himself, McMurtery stabbed Perez with a different knife, according to the report.

Perez’s boyfriend has reached out to ABC6 News and said McMurtery started the physical altercation. According to Perez’s boyfriend, the argument started because McMurtery was staying in the apartment, which he says was not part of the lease agreement.

Perez was rushed into surgery at Rhode Island Hospital.

Police are investigating the incident as a domestic felony assault.
