Two 14-year-olds have been charged after police say they attacked a 19-year-old store clerk in New Bedford.

Around 8:40 Wednesday night, officers in the area of Rivet and Hyacinth Streets heard glass shatter and saw two masked males running away. Officers brought the two males back to the Herbalife business nearby where the 19-year-old clerk claimed the suspects rushed into the store to rob him, and hit him in the face with a metal bar.

The clerk says he defended himself with a shovel but suffered severe bruising to his left eye. He also says the suspects smashed the front window with the metal bar as they left. They did not get away with any cash.

Officers recovered the masks and metal bar used in the attack and charged the juveniles with armed assault with intent to rob, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, destruction of property and disturbing the peace.

The victim was treated at the hospital and released.
