SMITHFIELD, R.I. (AP) _ Emergency crews were dispatched to a Providence County street after a half-dozen utility poles and wiring suddenly caught on fire.
The fire broke out around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday along Mountaindale Road in Smithfield. Police say the road was closed while firefighters battled the blaze and was later reopened around 7 p.m.
Sgt. Orlando Braxton says Mountaindale Road was partially closed due to some non-live wires hanging in the area.
Officials say they aren’t sure what caused the fire, but it appeared to be an electrical malfunction.
National Grid crews shut off electricity in the area, but no residents lost power because the line didn’t feed into any houses.
An investigation is ongoing. No injuries were reported.
