Police: Coach assaulted youth player at Tiverton basketball tournament

TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Police said a coach assaulted a youth player in an altercation at a basketball tournament in Tiverton over the weekend.
The Tiverton Police Department said 42-year-old Adam Hayes of Peabody, Mass. assaulted a 15-year-old after a game at Longplex Family and Sports Center.
Officials said units responded to Longplex at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for a report of a male party with a gun.
An investigation revealed that an altercation began on the court between players and a 15-year-old was allegedly assaulted by a coach who involved himself in the fight.
Authorities said the victim was a member of one of the teams playing in the tournament and declined to be taken to the hospital by Tiverton Rescue.
The coach was identified as Hayes, who was taken into custody and charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct.
Officials found no evidence of a weapon in the investigation.
Hayes was released on $1000 surety bail and is scheduled to appear in court on April 11 at 2nd Division District Court in Newport.
