Police: Downed tree initiated train derailment in Fall River

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WLNE) — A train derailed in Fall River Monday night.
The derailment happened just before 7:30 p.m. in the area of North Main and Clark streets
Police said when they arrived on scene, crew members said a tree that had fallen on the tracks and caused a low speed collision that forced the train off the tracks.
The train remained upright at all times. No injuries were reported.
Officials said that a 18,000 gallon diesel fuel tank was punctured and about 300 gallons of fuel did leak out. That leak has since been contained.
Police said that the train was carrying hazardous materials, but no hazardous materials were impacted.
A state hazmat team was called to assist with the matter and first responders are focusing on the environmental impact caused by the fuel leak.
