Police: FBI takes custody of person detained in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport police said officers detained a person wanted by the FBI Thursday night.

Police said the department was notified by the FBI about a subject suspected of being involved in a violent felony.

Officers were given a description of the vehicle the subject was believed to be operating, police said.

The car was later stopped by officers on Narragansett Avenue, police said.

According to police, the subject was detained and turned over to the FBI.

A police spokesperson said “unusual items” were found in the subject’s vehicle by detectives, prompting a search by the Rhode Island Bomb Squad assigned to the fire marshal’s office.

Police said the Bomb Squad searched the vehicle and determined both the vehicle and its contents were safe and did not pose a threat to the public.

Newport police said the incident is part of an ongoing federal investigation.

A spokesperson for the FBI’s Boston office said the agency did not have any information to provide at this time.

The subject who was detained has not been identified by either the FBI or Newport police.
