BERLIN (AP) _ Police in Munich asked people to stay away from the city’s main train station and a second train station in the city’s Pasing neighborhood, saying the Islamic State group was behind a "serious, imminent threat" by suicide bombers wanting to commit a terror attack on New Year’s Eve.

Munich police say on Facebook that according to "serious information, there will be an attack tonight."

German news agency DPA reported Thursday night that one train station had been evacuated and trains would no longer stop there.

Despite police warnings to stay away from crowds and the train stations, thousands of people were on the streets at midnight to welcome the New Year with fireworks.
