Police investigating after woman assaulted on walking path in Waltham

WALTHAM, Mass. (WLNE) — Massachusetts State Police announced they’re investigating an assault that happened on a walking path along the Charles River in Waltham.

Police said at around 8 p.m. Sunday night, a woman in her 20s was walking on the footbridge between Newtown and Farewell Streets near the Shaw’s supermarket.

The woman told officials she heard footsteps come up behind her before she was grabbed by someone who tried to put their hand over her mouth.

Authorities said the victim was able to escape and the assailant fled the scene. The suspect, identified as a man in his 30s or 40s, with tan skin, an average height and an athletic build wearing a baseball cap.

State Troopers and Waltham police responded and searched the area but said they were unable to locate a suspect. The investigation remains active.

Officials are urging the public to be aware of their surroundings and to call 911 if they see anything or anyone suspicious.
