Police: Man barricaded inside Smithfield residence, believed to have firearm
SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — The Smithfield Police Department have confirmed they’re managing an incident with a 59-year-old man who is experiencing a “change in mental status.”
According to police, the individual has barricaded himself in a room inside the residence at Elmgrove Avenue, and is believed to be in a possession of a firearm.
The stand-off started around 12 p.m. yesterday.
Officers, including the members of the department’s negotiation team, are maintaining communication with the individual in hopes to bring the situation to a safe and peaceful solution.
Police said there is currently no threat to the safety or others or the surrounding community.
#Update: 16 hours later, police said they’re managing an incident involving a man who has barricaded himself inside a Smithfield residence.
