POLICE: Middletown man barricaded in home claimed he had guns, explosives

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — Middletown police responded to Jepson Lane on Monday June 10 at approximately 11 a.m. in an attempt to locate a suspect on a domestic-related warrant.

Richard Perez, 36, was located at the scene, and police were informed he may have been having a mental health episode and under the influence of narcotics.

Perez was immediately uncooperative, according to police, and would only speak to officers through an open window.

Officials say Perez told officers he had guns and explosives and would use them, rather than surrender peacefully.

Officers retreated from the house, set a perimeter and the Newport County Regional Special Response Team was activated.

Negotiators were able to contact with Perez and convinced him to leave the house without incident.

Perez was placed under arrest and charged with domestic disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer in the execution of duty.
