Police note uptick in mail fishing in Warwick

WARWICK, R.I (WLNE) – The Warwick Police Department is warning residents of a large uptick in mail fishing in the area.

According to the department, the increase in fishing was noticed over the last year.

Mail fishing is when criminals use a string and some form of adhesive to “fish” outgoing mail from a mailbox.

Often times criminals target a mailbox where they believe there are checks.

According to the department, the checks are then altered and used to commit fraud.

Police are urging residents to be mindful of any individuals lingering at or around a mailbox, and take note of the collection times which are posted on the box.

The Warwick Police Department is working with RI State Police, as well as the US Postal Service in an effort to stamp out the fishing.
