Police have arrested a 20-year-old Providence man they say led state and Cranston police on a chase in a stolen car that eventually crashed into a tree and burst into flames.

Andre Savage was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle, eluding police and simple assault following Monday’s chase. He was held without bail on parole and bail violations.

Providence Lt. John Ryan says Savage stole a 2004 Saturn Vue from Cranston and led police on a chase starting at about 2:45 a.m.

The chase reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour before the crash.

Savage and his two passengers suffered serious injuries and needed to be extricated from the vehicle, but they are expected to survive.
