Police release identity of victim in fatal crosswalk crash in Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) —  Newport police have released the name of the victim who was killed in a fatal crosswalk crash in Newport late Monday night. 

52-year-old Timothy Gillissie died on Monday after being struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk on Broadway at Bedlow Avenue in Newport, according to police.

Gillissie was crossing the street when he was struck by a vehicle driven by a 56-year-old local resident.

The 56-year-old resident, who has not been identified, was cited for right of way in crosswalk (first offense) and operating without evidence of insurance, but no criminal charges have been filed at this point in time.

The Newport Police Department said they are still actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Newport residents told ABC 6 there’s been several incidents on the stretch of Broadway near Bedlow Avenue.
