Police say Fall River man shot RI teen in homicide that ‘almost looked like an execution’

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Cranston police arrested a 19-year-old man from Fall River and plan to charge him with shooting and killing a 16-year-old on Monday.

Police said 19-year-old D’Maury Monteiro shot and killed 16-year-old Eduardo Loran Colon of Providence just before 3 a.m. Monday.

“My immediate thought is that this was planned out to a certain extent,” Cranston Police Col. Michael Winquist said. “It almost looked like an execution.”

D’Maury Montiero, seen here in a booking photo provided by Cranston police, is accused of shooting and killing a teen in a parking lot on Dyer Avenue on Aug. 11, 2025.

The shooting occurred in the parking lot of the Pocasset Village Apartments on Dyer Avenue.

Winquist said Monteiro was arrested Tuesday morning in Dorchester, Mass.

Detectives believe Monteiro, Colon, and another man arrived at the apartment complex in Cranston together and appeared to be preparing to break into a vehicle.

Police said the car the group of three arrived in was stolen.

“We spoke to [Colon’s] mom, they said he was a good kid,” Winquist said. “Sometimes you’re in the wrong situation, maybe with the wrong people, and I think that was situation here.”

Police said surveillance footage from the complex was crucial in piecing together what happened.

“Anytime you get an actual video of a homicide, it doesn’t happen that often, and it was a very clear video,” Winquist said. “A lot of times you go to apartment complex, the camera is facing another direction or it’s an old system that is grainy, this was extremely clear.”

Police said Tuesday that they couldn’t release the footage to the public at such an early stage of the investigation.

Winquist said the video showed it all happened quickly, as the three men hopped out of the car and began searching other vehicles with flashlights.

“You can see two people kind of talking back and forth, almost like they were planning this,” Winquist said. “You could see one individual, the suspect we believe pulled a weapon, and as the individual comes around toward the back of the car, immediately the four shots were fired.”

Police accused Monteiro of firing multiple shots at Colon at close range before fleeing in a vehicle.

Winquist said Colon ran, making it a short ways before he finally collapsed, and his body was not found until about six hours later.

Police said no motive has been established at this point in the investigation.

Cranston police will now work to have Monteiro extradited to Rhode Island to face charges, according to Winquist, who is asking for the public’s help in tracking down the second suspect.
