ACUSHNET, MA – Two flashlights lit up dark rooms inside a home on Randall Street Sunday night, after two sisters broke a window and started creeping through, looking for cash. They left a two year old girl, inside their running car parked outside.
"When I arrived, I noticed a baby in the back seat of a car,” said Patrolman Danny DeAmaral of the Acushnet Police Department.
The child’s mother, Christine Ferreira, 25, of New Bedford was arrested along with her sister, Stephanie Ferreira, 27, also of New Bedford.
Police say they caught the two trying to escape from the home’s second floor window.
"We made our way back outside of the house, thinking they would try to climb out of a window,” said Officer DeAmaral. “And they did."
ABC6 spoke to neighbors Tuesday evening, who did not want to be identified, but said the house has a reputation.
"That house stinks,” one neighbor said.
Multiple people on the street said the house is frequently rented out. Police confirmed that information, adding that they are now investigating if the renter, was also renting to a tenant.
"Lots of chaos, lots of drama,” added a neighbor. “Lots of ‘F’ bombs flying. And that’s the only time we hear it in the neighborhood, is from that particular house."
But many were still shocked to learn that the suspects bringing trouble to their quiet neighborhood, also brought along a baby.
"Well, I don’t want to be too derogatory, but it’s horrible…bringing a kid up in the life of crime at two years old."
