Police standoffs in Rhode Island, southeast Massachusetts end peacefully

MANSFIELD, Mass. (WLNE) — Two separate standoffs in Rhode Island and southeast Massachusetts ended peacefully on Tuesday night.

Mansfield police were locked in a standoff with a man who had a gun in his hotel room for hours.

Police received a call just before 4 p.m. from a concerned mother, who said her son was under the influence and had a gun at his room at the Fairfield Inn & Suites.

Dozens of officers, K-9 units, and SWAT members surrounded the hotel as they attempted to convince the man to peacefully leave his room. Hotel guests were evacuated for several hours.

After over four hours, the man was taken into custody and brought to a local hospital for further evaluation.

Around the same time, police in Charlestown were engaged in a standoff with a man armed in his home on South County Trail.

Police were called around 3 p.m. for a report of a man with a gun making threats.

Officers were outside the house for over two hours before he came out and was taken into custody. He was also taken to a hospital for further evaluation.

No injuries were reported in either incident.

It was unknown if either of the men will face any charges.
