SCITUATE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Woonsocket man has been arrested after an alleged reckless driving and multi-car crash incident turned into multiple narcotics-related charges.

Scott Jones, 34, allegedly caused a four-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hartford Pike and Chopmist Hill Road Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

According to Scituate police, responding officers were notified of an erratic operator who had reportedly caused the crash.

Officers noted significant damage to the four cars, with one resting against a tree 50 feet from the intersection.

According to Scituate police, witnesses reported a gold Chevrolet Malibu traveling approximately 80 miles per hour and attempting to pass vehicles stopped at a red light.

The Malibu struck vehicles at the intersection, and then hit another vehicle head-on, according to witness statements to police.

Other witnesses said that the driver, identified by police as Jones, was trying to conceal items in his pants and was behaving erratically prior to police arrival.

Police said Jones was driving on a suspended Massachusetts license, and he was arrested for reckless driving and the license infraction while being treated for injuries.

During a search of Jones, police say that they found several bags of suspected narcotics in the suspect’s clothing.

The 221 grams of substances were later tested and confirmed to be cocaine and fentanyl, according to police.

They were accompanied by counterfeit Alprazolam pills containing fentanyl, according to Scituate police.

Jones was allegedly found to have additional unnamed narcotics at an area hospital.

No one was seriously injured in the crash.

Jones was arraigned by a Justice of the Peace at Rhode Island Hospital, held without bail and is charged with:

  • Manufacture/possession/delivery of cocaine (1 oz. to 1 kg)
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving with suspended license (second offense)
  • Possession of schedule I-V controlled substances

Police noted that Jones was arrested by Scituate officers on August 22 for an alleged DUI and on September 10 for allegedly driving with a suspended license.
