Portsmouth car crash leaves 5 people injured

Portsmouth, R.I. — A car accident on West Main Road in Portsmouth left two teenagers and three adults injured Tuesday evening.

Firefighters arrived to the scene at around 5:30 p.m. to find a three vehicle accident. The cars collided head on causing entrapment in two of the vehicles.

Two medical helicopters were requested from Boston MedFlight, but they were unavailable. However, Boston MedFlight summoned two helicopters from LifeStar out of Hartford, Connecticut.

Ambulances from Bristol, Middletown, Naval Station Newport, Newport, and Tiverton also responded to the scene. 

Portsmouth Firefighters removed a total of three patients from two of the vehicles utilizing the Jaws of Life.

Officials say the first patients were removed within 20 minutes of arrival.

Police say two adult males were transported to Rhode Island Hospital with life threatening injuries.  One of the males was transported by helicopter.

Two teenagers were transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with life threatening injuries.  In addition, one adult male was taken to Newport Hospital with apparent non-life threatening injuries. A female bystander was evaluated and treated at the scene, but refused to be transported to the hospital.
