Portsmouth's Ryan Westmoreland retired from the Red Sox on Wednesday.

The 22-year old inspired everyone by his drive to come back from surgery to remove a cavernous malformation from his brain stem in March of 2010.

He made good progress until a setback last July when he needed a second operation.

Ryan said it was clear the damage caused by the most recent surgery forced his decision to end his comeback.  He'll now pursue a college degree.
