PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The rumored top contender to be Hillary Clinton’s vice president visited Boston and Newport on Friday.

Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine attended a private fundraiser in the afternoon at the University of Massachusetts club, but didn’t speak to reporters.

Former Massachusetts Treasurer Steve Grossman, who was at the fundraiser, said Kaine told those at the event that he doesn’t know if he’s Clinton’s choice for running mate.

Kaine is also attending a private fundraiser on Friday evening in Newport, hosted by fellow Democratic U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.

Reed says Kaine is extraordinarily talented and has the intellect and temperament to do a great job as vice president.

Kaine also has a scheduled Saturday visit to Nantucket.

Political Analyst William Hudson says he’s almost positive Kaine is Clinton’s top choice. "He’s a very I think comfortable choice,” he said. “He’s somebody who’s very knowledgeable and articulate."

Clinton is expected to announce her VP pick Saturday and have that person campaign with her in the key state of Florida, ahead of the Democratic National Convention Monday.
