PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A United States Postal Service employee pled guilty on Wednesday for his role in a mail theft ring in Providence, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

33-year-old Darren Camacho, of Providence, pled guilty to conspiracy to steal mail and theft of U.S. Mail by a postal employee.

According to Acting United States Attorney Bloom, Camacho admitted that he and his-conspirators searched through the mail multiple times a week at the U.S. Mail Processing and Distribution Center and stole envelopes between March 1, 2023 and June 26, 2023.

After work, members of the conspiracy would meet at a designated location to open the envelopes and take out cash, gift cards, and checks.

Acting United States Attorney Bloom said the defendant gave some gift cards to another person and used others in Massachusetts and Rhode Island stores.

After a search of Camacho’s residence on June 28, 2023, law enforcement found 55 stolen gift cards.

Camacho is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 13.
