Power outages frustrating Warwick residents

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — The howling wind and the humming generator were the main two sounds in the Conimicut neighborhood of Warwick on Thursday.

The severe storm knocked out power around midnight Wednesday night.

It’s been challenging for Jackie Antonelli as she cares for a one-year-old granddaughter.

“Baby food goes in the microwave,” said Antonelli. “It’s all-around inconvenient. We have no phone. We have to use our cell phone, and that’s going to go dead soon. So for emergency purposes, it’s not good.”

She said they hadn’t seen National Grid crews, and if the power stays out they might have to go to a hotel.

“I really hope they come soon,” Antonelli said. “If it’s going to be out too much longer, we won’t stay here. With a baby, we need to do something.”

Just down the block, the outage impacted another family with young children.

“I haven’t taken a shower,” admitted Alyssa Capuano. “I hate to say that, but I haven’t. I don’t want to chance it, in case we need hot water for anything. We’re using hot water to heat up his bottles.”

But some in the neighborhood say they’re toughing it out tonight.

“There’s nothing you can do about it,” said Ernie Valliere. “You just deal with it, and move on. We’re a hardy sort here in New England.”
