FALL RIVER, M.A. (WLNE) — An effort to preserve a Vietnam-era helicopter is underway at Battleship Cove.

The “Huey” helicopter, also known as the UH-1M Iroquois, is in need for necessary repairs.

Museum volunteers noticed the need for conservation, and work has already begun with the addition of new skids on which the helicopter sits, Battleship Cove executive director John McDonagh said.

The chopper won’t be renovated into showroom condition; it will be restored to keep its scars of war to maintain its history.

But the restoration process is timely and costly so Battleship Cove is relying on GoFundMe funding for the first time.

McDonagh said the page went live earlier this month with a goal of $8,500, and has raised $160 as of Monday morning.

He hopes to complete fundraising in a few months, with the restoration efforts to be finished in about a year.

The GoFundMe page can be found here.
