Providence Charter Review Commission moves forward with hybrid school board model

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The city of Providence Charter Review Commission has recommended to go forward with a plan to make the school board partially elected and partially appointed.

Under the proposal approved Monday, five members would be appointed by the mayor and the other five would be elected.

The proposal would be see elections start in 2024, with appointed members given three-year terms starting in 2025.

The board would also have no taxing authority.

The proposal now goes to the City Council for a vote that would place the measure on November’s ballot.

Currently, the Providence School Board is made up of nine members appointed by the mayor.
