Providence City Council to vote on nearly $600 million budget

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence City Council is set to vote on a nearly $600 million budget during tonight’s city council meeting.

The proposed budget, set at $598 million for FY 2025, is the most significant increase in funding for Providence Public Schools in the last 15 years, according to release.

The budget also includes significant investments for for storm water and sewer system management, as well as climate change.

“This budget tackles our biggest challenges head-on and focuses on real results for our community,” said Smiley in a statement.

“We are investing in our schools, paving the way for more housing, fortifying our climate readiness and putting the city in a stronger financial position, all while better meeting the needs of our community with the highest level of city services,” he said.

The budget will need to pass through a vote twice before it’s approved.
