Providence City Councilor Helen Anthony resigning citing health issues

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence City Council member Helen Anthony is resigning from her seat as Ward 2 councilor effective September 1 citing a desire to fully focus on her health.

“As I continue to heal from the traumatic injuries I suffered when I was struck by a van in June 2023, my neurologist has recommended that I devote more time to my recovery,” said Anthony in a statement on her website.

“I’m proud to have served Ward 2 and the City of Providence and to have chaired the council’s Finance Committee. Unfortunately, the demands of those roles is hindering my ability to heal.”

Anthony has been on the council since 2019, and said in her statement that she is proud of her work to encourage public engagement in government.

“The future of Providence depends not just on who we elect, but on the collective power of its people—people who offer testimony at public hearings, volunteers who lead community groups, advocates who organize protests, parents who champion their children’s education, residents who serve on boards, and neighbors who lend a hand,” said Anthony.

Anthony concluded her statement with hopes that a strong candidate vies for her seat in a special election, which she stated must take place within 90 days of a vacancy.
