An overboard boater was rescued by Providence Police and Fire Friday morning after his boat capsized off of Gano Street Park.

Emergency crews were dispatched to Gano Street Park around 5 a.m. for a report that a 39-year-old man had fallen into the water.

Three people on scene told police they had all been on a boat crabbing with another individual when it capsized, sending them all into the water. Three were able to get back on the boat but the fourth, a male, drifted away with current, holding onto a floatation device.

The fourth boater, identified as Pep Kim, was located under the Henderson Bridge near Waterman Avenue, calling out for help.

Kim was evaluated and transported to Rhode Island Hospital. He suffered minor injuries but is in good condition.

“I praise our officers for their quick actions this morning and also thank the East Providence Police Department for their assistance with this rescue,” said Colonel Clements. “Through these well coordinated efforts we were able to save a young man’s life. Great job to all those involved, especially Lt. Ryan and Sgt. Currier for pulling this man from the water to safety.”
