Providence FD works to extinguish Westminster Street fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Providence fire crews battled a three-alarm blaze at a four-story high rise construction building Wednesday morning.

Fire personnel responded to the call at approximately 10 a.m. on Westminster Street and the fire was put out in about an hour, according to the Providence Fire Department.

“A person inside actually noticed the fire and smoke and pulled the fire alarm to get us here,” Providence Fire Deputy Assistant Chief Robert Butler said.

According to the department, the building contained business spaces and no residences, and there were no injuries to any occupants or responding firefighters.

The structure inside made the task of dealing with heavy smoke difficult, but the fire has been classified as an external fire by the department.

“It was pretty much a tough time with the building because there is no standard pipe system inside to supply us water so we had to create our own with the tower ladder truck there,” Butler added. “Our company got it under control pretty quickly.”

Dorrance Street was closed down as firefighters worked to contain the fire and several surrounding streets experienced heavy traffic backup.

The fire is now under investigation.
