Providence Ice Rink reopens with festive fun and upgrades

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) — The holiday season is in full swing in Providence, with the City’s newly renovated ice rink officially open for the winter.

After a $2.5 million renovation, the Providence Rink now features a new chiller system, cold floor, and clear dasher boards.

“A long overdue upgrade to both enhance the skating experience, improve sustainability, and ensure that this rink remains a year-round destination for years to come for neighbors and visitors,” Mayor Brett Smiley said.

In addition to skating, the Providence Rink offers ice bumper cars, lessons for all skill levels, and a festive atmosphere with lights and music.

“This is the best time of year to slow things down,” Jersey City resident Nikhil Panchal said. “Every now and then it doesn’t hurt to take the foot off the pedal and enjoy life a little bit.”

Skaters at the grand opening Monday told ABC6 News why they were excited for the new rink.

“I’m looking forward for the holidays and for skating this season,” River P. said.

While some skaters said they were eager to hit the ice, others were a little hesitant.

“(I) want to ice skate but it’s a little tricky,” Avery B. said.

Even first-time skaters and those with little experience said they were excited to give it a try.

“I’m not that good at ice skating, but I think I’ll give it another go,” Louisiana resident Jess K. said.

The ice rink is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., through March 2025.
