Providence launches summer program providing meals to youth

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The city of Providence has launched a program to provide free meals to youth throughout the summer.
Mayor Jorge Elorza was joined by state officials and community stakeholders Monday to kick off the Summer Food Service Program.
Officials say free meals will be offered weekdays through Aug. 21 at more than 30 sites across the city.
The federal program is open to any child aged 18 or younger. This is the second year in a row that Providence has received a grant from the National League of Cities for this program.
Other Rhode Island cities launched the program last week. Officials say free meals will be offered at more than 200 sites across the state.
The program is administered by the state's Education Department and community partners.
