A Providence man was arraigned Friday morning on murder charges in the stabbing death of an army veteran.
Prosecutors say Erico Montalvo, 18, of Providence was in the Walgreens parking lot of Elmwood Avenue just before 2 a.m. when he was involved in an argument that led to the fatal stabbing of 26-year-old Colby Mendonca and the stabbing of his friend Russel Gleason.
Prosecutors say the suspect admitted to Providence investigators that he had been at the Walgreens and stabbed both men.
No plea was entered Friday. Montalvo was charged with murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. He is being held without bail pending a hearing July 28.
Colby Mendonca had served a tour in Afghanistan and was discharged last fall. He leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter.
Mendonca was laid to rest friday morning.
