TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Tiverton police have charged a Providence man accused of scamming a 74-year-old Tiverton woman.

Henry Sanchez Nunez, 49, was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and conspiracy.

According to police, Nunez called the woman claiming to be a friend of hers and that he was involved in a crash in Pennsylvania.

Police said a short time later, another man called, claiming to be a public defender and that the “friend” involved in the crash needed $4,500 cash for bail.

Police said after the woman agreed to meet the man at the Bristol Stop and Shop she became concerned and contacted police.

Investigators said they began to conduct surveillance of the meet up spot and saw black Chrysler 300 circling the area.

According to detectives, the man eventually told the woman to meet her at her home and when the two exchanged the cash, police arrested Nunez.

Sanchez was arraigned in Newport court last week.

Police are still working to identify the second suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Josh Pelletier of Det. Matt Braun.
