Providence man found guilty of manslaughter in 2020 stabbing

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Attorney General Peter Neronha said that a Providence man was found guilty of manslaughter for a 2020 stabbing.

38-year-old Michael Domenech was found guilty of one count of manslaughter for the killing of 31-year-old Corey Vargas.

Neronha said that Domenech stabbed Vargas 13 times after the victim tried to buy fentanyl from the defendant.

In September 2020 the two met near Swiss Street. Domenech entered the back of the car Vargas and two friends were in and handed him a bag of fentanyl.

Vargas then exited to the vehicle after saying he needed to retrieve a bag to put the drugs in before taking off running.

He then called his friend to pick him up. When the car arrived Domenech got out and stabbed him.

Vargas was driven to the a nearby fire station on Atwells Avenue where rescue personnel attempted lifesaving measures before being transported to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Domenech is currently being held at the Adult Correctional Institutions awaiting a sentencing hearing on Jan. 26, 2024.
