Providence man gets federal prison for cocaine trafficking conspiracy

A Providence man is sentenced to federal prison after participating in a conspiracy to trafficking cocaine Friday.

Peter F. Neronha the United States Attorney and Bruce M. Foucart, Special Agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations for New England announced Juan C. Maldonado, 31, of Providence was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for conspiracy to trafficking cocaine on June 5th.

Maldonado pleaded guilty on March 13, 2014 to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute cocaine and one count of attempting to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine.

He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release once he completes his prison term.

On July 2, 2014 Customs and Boarder Protection agents in Puerto Rico discovered two packages that had safes in them filled with 4 kilograms of cocaine addressed to Providence.

An undercover Postal Inspector agent delivered the package on July 7, 2014 to the address where Maldonado was living.

He met the Inspector at the door and called his brother to sign for the package.

Maldonado exited the house with someone twenty minutes later and Agents seized the black bag he was carrying that contained a safe and cocaine and was arrested.

Elix Javier fled the house as agents entered and remained a fugitive until he was arrested on July 24, 2014 in Lynn, MA and was acquitted at a trial on March 26, 2015 of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute cocaine along with aiding and abetting, all one count.
