The Democrat challenging former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci says it’s an embarrassment that the twice-convicted felon is running for mayor again.

Jorge Elorza made the comments during the three mayoral candidates’ first joint appearance together, in a candidate’s forum at a retirement community Wednesday.

Cianci says he has always proclaimed his innocence in the corruption charge that sent him to prison in 2002. He said he couldn’t control all the city workers he oversaw during the 22 years he was mayor, several of whom also went to prison.

Republican Dan Harrop also went after Cianci, asking how he can say he has changed when his charity pasta sauce has given no money to charity in recent years. Cianci replied that the charity has helped hundreds of children go to college.
