Update: Providence police chase ends in crash, suspect in custody, drugs and cash seized

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Charles Street was closed off overnight after a police chase that ended in a crash.

Craig Benford, 59, was stopped for multiple vehicle violations by Providence police and jumped a curb and fled when a second cruiser approached.

Police later found the vehicle disabled after it crashed into a curb near 93 Charles Street in Providence.

Benford then jumped in the rear of the vehicle in an attempt to escape custody but was apprehended.

Crystal meth, a scale and $7,427 in cash were found in the front seat of the vehicle.

Benford fled officers last week and had an active warrant.
