PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — In honor of National Police Week, the Providence Police Department held its annual Peace Officers’ Memorial Service Monday morning.
The ceremony is in honor of the fallen officers in the Providence Police Department as well as retired and active members who have passed away this year.
In addition to Providence, tens of thousands of attendees were in Washington, D.C. Monday honoring officers who have died in the line of duty.
“There’s a reason why there’s a memorial in Washington, D.C. What the officers, the sacrifices that they make, and what they go through each and every day,” said Major Thomas Verdi of the Providence Police Department.
In Providence, a total of ten police officers have died in the line of duty. The most recent was in April of 2012.
