PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)- A Providence Police cruiser was hit while responding to a call on Thurbers Avenue early Thursday morning.

Police say the officer was responding to report of a suspicious vehicle, just after 1 a.m., with sirens and lights activated.

An SUV struck the driver’s side of the cruiser at the intersection of Thurbers Avenue and Eddy Street.

The driver of the SUV says he did not hear the lights or sirens, and continued through the intersection, according to police.

The on-duty officer, and driver of the SUV, were transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

The driver has been issued a summons for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, and will appear in court on April 19.
