Providence police officer struck during vigil, woman charged with DUI

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE): A woman was charged with DUI after a Providence police officer was struck during a vigil on Saturday night.

A vigil, organized by the group Black Lives Matter, was being held for Delron Fields, 35, after he was shot and killed in the parking lot of the Dunkin’ Donuts on Broad Street.

According to Providence Police Commander, Thomas Verdi, over a dozen officers  were called for a disturbance at the vigil with roughly 100 people.

An officer tried to intervene in one of the altercations, around 10:30 p.m. When police tried to stop one of the women from driving away, she struck an officer, according to Verdi.

Police said Chanel-Rich Turner, 28, was charged with DUI after hitting the officer.

The officer sustained minor injuries, he was treated and released from Roger Williams Hospital.

The shooting is still under investigation.
