Providence Public Library celebrates 150th birthday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A special celebration is underway at a place many Rhode Islanders hold close to their hearts.

The Providence Public Library is marking 150 years of history, and the community is invited to join in on the fun.

From laser cutters to a lively story time, the Providence Public Library has come a long way since its early days.

Now celebrating 150 years, the library is looking back at its history, and looking ahead with creativity.

“That this library was built in the 50s this portion of the library and so I had that you know and then I had undergo some renovations so things changed,” said Tonia Mason, Providence Public Library Marketing and Communications Director.

“It wasn’t as open and airy as it is now and welcoming. It wasn’t as easy to get point 1 to point b some of those issues were addressed with this renovation.”

After a major renovation, the library has become a hub for learning, creativity and community.

“Yeah, it’s been really amazing. Our foot is over 400% and that’s pre-COVID level renovation so we are heavily in use,” said executive director Jack Martin.

“I’ve been told that our children’s Storytime is like a Taylor Swift concert they’re so busy so we are full up.”

The makerspace workshop is a newer favorite for all ages.

“We have our makers program also for teens and middle school use actually all ages. We expanded it to all ages and that’s our workshop which to check out at the birthday party so we are able to learn how to use the machines in there,” said Beth Richie, director of external relations.

“Learn how to use the printers, laser cutters to make their creative visions come to life.”

And for longtime visitors, the celebration is a chance to reflect on just how much this space has meant over the years.

The Providence Public Library’s 150th birthday party kicks off Saturday at the downtown location on Empire Street.

The event is free and open to all ages.
