Changes are coming for Providence students in the next school year.

The Providence School Board released its new 2015-2016 district calendar Tuesday after surveying parents, teachers, staff and students on their suggestions for changes to the original schedule.

After looking through 4,500 responses, the district decided on the following:

•The school year will start for students on Wednesday, September 2 instead of the last week of August.

•The two Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will be observed with one day of school closure for each. Good Friday will also remain a school holiday.

•The December holiday break will be two full weeks, even though Christmas is a Friday. The vacation has sometimes been two full weeks, and sometimes less, depending upon where in the week Christmas and New Year’s Day fall.

•The February vacation will be shortened. Rather than a full week, as has been traditional, schools will be closed just for the President’s Day holiday and the Tuesday following, leaving three days of school in that week.

•The April vacation will remain a full week.

•The last day of school is calendared for Thursday, June 16, with three snow days also indicated for June 17, 20 and 21. This year’s use of seven snow days was highly unusual, and three is closer to the norm for the district.

The district says the changes come after efforts to re-examine its allocation of the 180 school days.
