Providence scrapyard reopens after fire

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Recycled Metals resumed operations Monday, according to a spokesperson.
Last month, a fire broke out at the scrapyard.
The business on Allens Avenue was ordered to shutdown so it could prove it was equipped to prevent future fires.
In a certification provided to ABC6, infrared cameras have been installed and have also been tested.
It also caught fire back in April and in 2023.
Mayor Brett Smiley and city council members have called for the closure of the scrapyard.
The city had previously issued a cease-and-desist on operations at the yard on March 8 after the owners withdrew a necessary application, and the city council passed a resolution in May calling for the closure due to “environmental concerns.”
