Providence settles with Jhamal Gonsalves’ family for $11M

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The City of Providence has settled with the family of a man who was involved in a moped crash with police officers for $11 million.

Karns Law Firm, who represented the family of Jhamal Gonsalves, said that the family is “happy to resolve the case.”

“This settlement should be able to provide for Jhamal’s needs for the rest of his life,” a statement from the law firm said. “This incident had a devastating effect on him and his family. This was a young man with the world at his feet and now he will require lifelong medical care and is unlikely to ever work again.”

Gonsalves was put into a coma in 2020 after a police cruiser appeared to strike his moped.
