Providence students optimistic, looking towards next year
PROVIDENCE, R.I (WLNE) — Hundreds of Providence College students flocked to the Old Irish Social Club to watch their Friars in the Sweet Sixteen. They were ultimately sent home sooner than expected.
The Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Friars by a score of 66-61.
In the beer garden of the bar, the cheers and chants of students slowly changed to sighs and groans, as only a fraction were left after halftime.
Although the Friars made a comeback in the second half, PC’s season came to a close.
Providence fans who stayed until the end were grateful for the season.
“I am so depressed, but you know what, I love my friars,” said Sheila Dunn, a PC student. “I really appreciate everything we’ve been through this semester. It has been the best basketball season I have ever lived through, and I really have enjoyed every moment of it.”
One student told ABC 6, “Villanova, next year, we’re coming for you. Don’t doubt us next year.”
The Friars reached their first Sweet Sixteen in 25 years under the coaching of Ed Cooley.
